Spoken English for business and culture
Course Description
Spoken English for business and culture is aimed at those who wish to practice their English speaking skills and build on their confidence in using English for business and travel purposes. The course is based on basic themes relating to international news, business, the economy, and travel. Participants work systematically on increasing their use of basic vocabulary and phrases for expressing themselves on issues relating to Iceland. Participants practise their pronunciation skills and work on vocabulary building.
Various speaking activities are completed: open discussions, the short talk, pronunciation practise, small group speaking sessions. Individual feedback is provided and participants are made aware of their strengths and weaknesses in English. The course also covers aspects relating to learning strategies for English.
Course Content:
Learning of new vocabulary / Pronunciation training / Communication strategies / how to give a short talk / how to agree and disagree / how to handle complaints / courteous communication / body language / stage fright / use of voice / basic grammar
Reading Texts and vocabulary building: News at BBC / Short articles on Iceland (the economy / politics / travel / educational system / business sector).
Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, participants will have gained:
- increased self-confidence in oral communication
- improved pronunciation
- to increase your use of specific vocabulary relating to various themes (business verbs, nouns and adjectives; small talk about Iceland)
- an understanding of the various communication strategies
- an understanding of the main vocabulary learning strategies
- increased fluency
