Course Description:

Telephone English is a practical course that covers the main aspects relating to the use of business English over the telephone.  The course covers the main telephone phrases that business people use in dealing with customers / suppliers via the phone.  The course also includes pronunciation training, use of voice, body language for telephone purposes, and language tools that are aimed at enhanced communication.

Emphasis is placed on an understanding and correct pronunciation of vocabulary relating the most common business verbs, nouns and adjectives.   The course will also deal with complaint-handling and how to deal with difficult people.

The course covers that strategies that can be applied when discussing advanced or unknown topics over the phone and how to deal with situations where accents are unclear and speakers are not able to express themselves in a clear and understandable  manner.


Course Duration:


Three meetings of 1.5 hours each ( 4.5 hours in total). Dates: Mondays: 15 and 22 February and 1 March (16:30- 18:00).

Course Schedule:

Meeting 1: Monday, 15 February

1.    Basic Telephone English Booklet (pronunciation of specific letters / how to say numbers / standard phrases for telephone conversations) 

2.    Pronunciation: the /v/ and /w/ sounds of English

3.    Business Verbs

4.    Communication strategies: the voice  / body language

Meeting 2: Monday, 22 February

1.    How to deal with complaints / difficult people

2.    Pronunciation: the /s/ sounds of English

3.    Business Nouns 

4.    Communication Strategies: how to encourage communication  / keep a conversation going

Meeting 3: Monday, 1 March

1.    Telephone Meetings (meetings vocabulary / agenda / minutes) 

2.    Pronunciation: the weak vowels of English / Pronunciation Tips

3.    Business Nouns / Adjectives

4.    Course Review

Course Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, participants will have:

  • Increased their confidence in using English over the phone.
  • Improved their pronunciation of the main sounds of English.
  • Increased their business vocabulary and use of standard phrases.
  • A better understanding of the tools and strategies that can be applied when dealing with complaints and difficult people.

NOTE: Maximum of 12 participants
